Punch the monkey’s zoo responds to claims he’s constantly ‘being bullied’

Posted on March 12, 2026 By admin

Punch, the baby macaque at Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan, went viral after being rejected by his mother at birth and clinging to a stuffed toy as a “surrogate mother.” Recent videos showed other monkeys scolding him, sparking concerns of bullying.

The zoo clarified that these interactions are normal disciplinary behaviors in macaque society, not abuse, and that Punch’s safety isn’t at risk. Some aggressive monkeys were removed, and Punch is increasingly interacting with others in his troop. The zoo said relocating him could harm his social development and affirmed they will continue ensuring his well-being.
