New York Yankees pitcher Cam Schlittler got a scare before Sunday’s Spring Training game against the Detroit Tigers when he opened his locker at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, Florida, and found a spider inside. Schlittler called security to remove it rather than handle it himself.
Despite the creepy encounter, Schlittler, 25, has been strong this spring, recording 10 strikeouts in six innings while allowing just one run and one walk. He’s recovering from back inflammation but looks sharp as he pushes for a bigger role with the Yankees. “I want to be here my entire career,” he said.
Drafted by the Yankees in the seventh round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of Northeastern University, Schlittler rose quickly through the minors thanks to his upper-90s fastball. He debuted in the majors in July 2025, finishing 4–3 with a 2.96 ERA in 14 starts and 84 strikeouts in 73 innings, including eight scoreless postseason innings in the Wild Card Series.
