Matt Clark, the veteran character actor best known for Back to the Future Part III, has died at 89.
He passed away Sunday at his home in Austin, Texas, from complications following back surgery, his family confirmed. Over a decades-long career, Clark appeared in more than 120 film and TV projects, including Jeremiah Johnson and many Westerns.
His family said he valued people over fame and felt lucky to do what he loved. “He died the way he lived — on his terms,” they shared.
Fans remember him as Chester the bartender in Back to the Future Part III, alongside Michael J. Fox’s Marty McFly.
Born November 25, 1936, in Washington, D.C., Clark built a steady Hollywood career from the late 1960s, known for his tough, understated roles. His TV credits include Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Rockford Files, and Little House on the Prairie.
He is survived by his wife, Sharon Mays, and his daughter, Amiee Clark.
