Rachel Ward, the British actress and model, became a household name as Meggie Cleary in the 1983 miniseries The Thorn Birds. Though over 200 actresses auditioned, Ward was chosen for her ability to portray Meggie from a naive young girl to a mature woman. Her performance earned her a Golden Globe nomination, and the show won multiple Emmys and Golden Globes.
The miniseries also changed Ward’s personal life—on set, she met her future husband, actor Bryan Brown. The couple married months later and moved to Australia, raising three children together.
Ward continued acting in film and TV, including On the Beach, Rake, and Devil’s Playground, and later moved into producing and directing. She was honored with an AM (Member of the Order of Australia) for her work advocating for disadvantaged youth.
Today, Ward is 68, a grandmother, and continues to work alongside her daughter Matilda in film, including The Death and Life of Otto Bloom, portraying the same character at different ages. Her legacy combines a remarkable acting career with family and social contributions.
