Beloved character actor James Tolkan, best known as the strict principal Mr. Strickland in the Back to the Future franchise, has died at 94. He first appeared in the 1985 film, returned in the sequels, and also voiced the character in the animated series. He was also known for playing Stinger, the tough commanding officer in Top Gun (1986).
Tolkan’s death was confirmed by Back to the Future co-writer Bob Gale; he passed peacefully at his home in Lake Placid, New York.
Born in 1931 in Calumet, Wisconsin, Tolkan had a difficult childhood, leaving school at 15 and briefly joining a gang. He served in the Navy during the Korean War but was discharged due to a heart condition, then studied arts and music on the GI Bill, discovering a passion for acting.
He built a steady career in film and theater, appearing in Serpico, Prince of the City, Family Business, Love and Death, and WarGames, often collaborating with director Sidney Lumet. Known for portraying strict authority figures, Tolkan also starred on Broadway, including the original 1984 production of Glengarry Glen Ross, and remained connected to fans and co-stars throughout his life.
