My aunt’s joy faded. Harris continued, “This needs to be understood and resolved fairly.” My parents froze. I stepped forward. “Leaving Grandma wasn’t an accident. It was a choice. She deserves to know why.” My mom’s guilt surfaced; my dad’s bravado crumbled. Harris added, “Mrs. Hazel has family who won’t let this slide.” Grandma then spoke softly: “I don’t know why you did it, but I’m not alone anymore.” Harris smiled at her. “Let’s go home.” We walked away, leaving behind the weight of the lie, moving forward with truth and dignity.
