Donald Trump cannot run for a third U.S. presidential term, but he recently drew attention after joking that he might run for president of Venezuela instead.
During a press conference, Trump claimed he would “poll higher than anybody” in Venezuela and said he could quickly learn Spanish before running—though the remarks were made in a light, joking tone.
This came amid rising global tensions, including U.S. involvement in conflicts with Iran and actions in Venezuela, where leader Nicolás Maduro was previously captured by U.S. forces.
Trump also praised Secretary of State Marco Rubio for his Spanish skills, while joking that he himself wouldn’t spend time learning the language.
Despite speculation about a third term, Trump’s comments about Venezuela were not serious policy—just a controversial joke that quickly went viral.
