My mom never sugarcoated anything. When my dad died, she sat me and my younger brother down and said, “Your father was a good dad—but a terrible husband.” No drama, just truth.
She didn’t take us to the funeral. She wanted us to remember the man who built birdhouses with us—not a coffin in the ground. She never spoke badly about him, but she never softened the truth either: he loved us deeply, and he failed her quietly. Both could exist.
Growing up, I carried that conflict. I loved my dad, but felt guilty—like loving him meant betraying my mom. We never visited his grave. I told myself I didn’t need to, but really, I was afraid of what I’d feel.
Years later, I finally went. I expected something forgotten. Instead, his grave was clean, cared for—and beside his name was a plaque:
“The man who couldn’t be a husband, but never stopped being a hero to his kids.”
I knew my mom had put it there.
In that moment, everything changed. She hadn’t kept us away out of anger—she protected us from pain we weren’t ready to carry. She had faced it alone, and still chose grace.
I cried—not from grief, but relief. I could love my dad without betraying my mom. Both truths could exist.
For the first time, my love didn’t feel divided—it felt whole.
