Pope Leo has responded after President Donald Trump publicly criticized him over his comments on war and global politics.
Pope Leo recently condemned rising global violence, calling out “the idolatry of power and money” and urging world leaders, including Trump, to pursue peace instead of escalation. He also warned that attacks on civilians violate international law and stressed the suffering of innocent people caught in conflict.
Trump reacted strongly on Truth Social, calling the Pope “weak on crime” and attacking his views on foreign policy. He also claimed the Church chose him as Pope partly because he is American, and said he disagreed with Leo’s stance on issues involving Iran and other global conflicts.
In response, Pope Leo said he does not want to engage in a political debate with Trump, adding that the message of the Gospel should not be misused. He reaffirmed that his focus is on promoting peace, dialogue, and protecting innocent lives rather than politics.
“I will continue to speak out against war,” he said, emphasizing that too many innocent people are suffering and that leaders must seek better solutions through peace.
