He said, “…not your setting.”
I let it sit for a moment before replying. “Yes,” I said calmly. “There is.”
James didn’t ask further. “I’ll handle it,” he said.
I ended the call and drove back to the resort, arriving the same way I had before—but this time without hesitation.
Inside, the lobby felt different. Tense. My father was at the front desk trying to cancel my reservation. My brother stood nearby, arms crossed. My mother avoided eye contact.
“You can’t cancel it,” I said.
My father didn’t even look at me. “It’s already handled.”
“It isn’t,” I replied.
Before he could argue, a man in a suit arrived from the elevator—James Hendricks, the resort’s director of operations. The room shifted instantly.
“I understand there’s an issue with a reservation,” he said.
My father nodded. “My daughter doesn’t need it. Remove it.”
James didn’t answer him. He looked at me instead. “Miss Patterson.”
That changed everything.
“The reservation is under owner review,” James said. “No changes without authorization.”
My father scoffed. “Then call the owner.”
“I already did,” James said.
Silence.
He turned to me again. “Miss Patterson, would you like to proceed with your stay?”
My mother went pale. My brother froze.
“What is he talking about?” my father demanded.
I met his eyes. “The part of my life you never asked about.”
James stepped forward. “Miss Patterson holds a controlling interest in the Grand View Resort group.”
The words landed hard.
“That’s not possible,” my brother said.
“It is,” James replied.
My mother whispered my name.
I didn’t look at her. I looked at my father instead. “You said this wasn’t my setting,” I said quietly.
He had no answer.
I turned back to James. “I’ll stay for the week.”
“Of course,” he said.
“And keep their reservations as they are,” I added.
“Understood.”
I picked up my suitcase and walked to the elevator.
Behind me, no one spoke.
Because the version of me they thought they knew… no longer existed.
