To teach him that adulthood comes with responsibilities, single mother Heidi Johnson wrote him a humorous “roommate contract,” explaining that if he wanted independence, he’d need to pay rent, utilities, food costs, and even cover things like internet and lights. He was also expected to cook and clean for himself.
At first, her son got upset and stormed off, but after having time to think, he came back asking how he could earn back his privileges. Johnson explained the lesson was never about money, but about helping him understand that nothing comes free and that adulthood means responsibility as well as freedom.
After she shared the letter online, many praised her parenting style, saying it was a creative way to prepare her son for the real world and teach accountability.
