Phillip Herron, a 34-year-old single father from Durham, England, died by suicide in 2019 after struggling with debt, financial stress, and delays in receiving support through the UK’s Universal Credit system.
Out of work and raising three children, Herron was reportedly left with just $6 in his account while waiting weeks for his first welfare payment. Buried in debt and facing eviction, the pressure became overwhelming.
Hours before his death, he posted a tearful goodbye message. His family later discovered the extent of his financial hardship, including unpaid bills, loans, and housing issues.
His mother, Sheena Derbyshire, has since spoken publicly, criticizing long payment delays and urging struggling people to seek help and talk to someone.
Herron’s case sparked public outrage and renewed criticism of Universal Credit, with many pointing to delays in financial support as worsening hardship for vulnerable families.
