Donald Trump sparked online debate after a brief Oval Office interaction during a White House event on May 5 announcing the return of the Presidential Fitness Test.
While speaking with children and athletes, he asked a young girl about her sports goals. She said she played volleyball and hoped to try soccer. Trump then asked about her height and whether she could “smash the ball” or jump high. After she replied “not very,” he suggested soccer might suit her better and told her, “Good luck, OK?”
The exchange quickly went viral, with critics accusing him of discouraging a child’s athletic dreams, calling the comments inappropriate and embarrassing for a young girl.
Supporters, however, defended the moment as harmless advice, arguing he was simply being realistic and guiding her toward a sport better suited to her abilities.
The clip has since fueled a wider debate online about how public figures should speak to children in such settings.
