Betty Broderick, who became nationally known for the 1989 killings of her ex-husband Dan Broderick and his new wife Linda Kolkena, has died in prison at age 78 while serving a life sentence.
The California Department of Corrections said she died on May 8 at an outside medical facility after being transferred for higher-level care. Her death was initially listed as natural causes, with an official ruling pending.
Her son said she had recently suffered serious health issues, including infections and injuries from a fall, and was in intensive care before her death. All four of her children were reportedly with her at the end.
Broderick was convicted in 1991 of two counts of second-degree murder for the 1989 shooting, which followed a bitter divorce and custody battle after her husband remarried his former assistant. The case became one of the most infamous true crime stories of its time.
She was sentenced to 30 years to life and repeatedly denied parole, with her next hearing scheduled for 2032.
