Driven by a desire to find the mother he never knew, 16-year-old Eric secretly leaves a camping trip with his foster family, the Johnsons. Although they had loved and cared for him since he was 12, Eric feared their bond had changed after the birth of their biological daughter, Mila.
During a stop at a roadside diner, Eric recognizes a sign from an old photo of himself and his birth mother, Eliza. That night, he sneaks away to find her, hoping for answers about his past.
When he finally meets Eliza, the reunion is heartbreaking. Cold and distant, she rejects him, admits she abandoned him, steals his money, and disappears, leaving Eric devastated and alone.
Police later bring Eric back to the station, where the worried Johnsons rush to embrace him. Through tears, Eric admits he feared he no longer belonged with them. But Mr. and Mrs. Johnson reassure him that he has always been their son.
Then comes the surprise: the camping trip was meant to lead to one special question — they wanted to officially adopt him.
In that moment, Eric realizes the family he had been searching for was with him all along.
