The room fell silent as Ethan stared at the bank screen, his face pale with shock. The manager finally cleared his throat. “Mrs. Eleanor, this appears to be only a secondary account. According to our records, you also have a primary account with substantial funds—far more than needed for this loan.”
Ethan looked at me in disbelief. “Mom… what is this?”
I met his eyes calmly. “It seems there’s more to me than you thought, Ethan.”
The manager asked if I still wanted to continue with the loan application, but I shook my head. “No, thank you. I have other plans for my assets.”
Ethan’s anger quickly turned into humiliation. “You lied to us.”
“No,” I replied softly. “I protected myself. Something I learned I had to do after the way you treated me.”
On the silent drive home, Ethan finally asked, “Why didn’t you just say no from the start?”
“I wanted you to see what greed can do,” I said. “I hoped you’d remember how to be the son I once knew.”
When we arrived, I told him he and Jessica would have to build their own future without depending on me anymore. As he walked away defeated, I sat alone in my bungalow feeling something I hadn’t felt in years—freedom.
For the first time, I had taken back control of my life. Quietly, I whispered to my late husband, “I did it, love. And they never saw it coming.”
