Eric Dane, best known for playing Dr. Mark Sloan “McSteamy” on Grey’s Anatomy, has died at age 53, according to his family.
His death comes 10 months after publicly revealing his battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. In a statement, his family said he passed away surrounded by loved ones, including his wife and daughters, Billie and Georgia.
Born in San Francisco in 1972, Dane began acting in the 1990s with roles on shows like Saved by the Bell, The Wonder Years, and Married… with Children before becoming a breakout star on Grey’s Anatomy in 2006.
After leaving the series in 2012, he appeared in films including X-Men: The Last Stand, Valentine’s Day, and Burlesque. More recently, he earned praise for his role as Cal Jacobs on Euphoria.
Off-screen, Dane spoke openly about addiction, mental health struggles, and his ALS diagnosis, later becoming an advocate for awareness and research. He was remembered for his charisma, emotional depth, and the lasting impact he made on fans and colleagues throughout his career.
