A Florida grandmother’s actions have led to two tragic deaths, forever impacting her family. Tracey Nix, 67, was sentenced after her 7-month-old granddaughter, Uriel Schock, died in November 2022 after being left in a hot car for hours. This follows the death of her 16-month-old grandson, Ezra, who drowned in 2021 while under Nix’s care.
In April 2025, Nix was sentenced to five years for leaving Uriel unattended in a car, after a jury found her guilty but acquitted her of aggravated manslaughter. The incident occurred when Nix forgot Uriel was in the vehicle after lunch on a 90-degree day. Uriel’s parents, Kaila and Drew Schock, spoke out in court, grieving the repeated tragedies.
Despite Nix’s remorse and attempts at seeking mental health treatment, Judge Brandon Rafool emphasized the severity of the situation, citing the repeated nature of the incidents. Nix, a retired school principal, was sentenced for her role in the deaths. This case highlights the dangers of leaving children in hot cars, with over 1,100 children having died in hot car incidents since 1990.
