A California high school track meet sparked nationwide debate after Reese Hogan stepped onto the first-place podium despite officially finishing second in the triple jump at the CIF Southern Section Finals.
Hogan had been defeated by AB Hernandez, a transgender athlete competing in the female division, who won by more than four feet. Viral footage of Hogan standing on the top podium reignited arguments over transgender athletes in women’s sports.
The controversy comes amid growing political debate, including former President Donald Trump signing an executive order banning transgender women from competing in female sports divisions.
Critics argued the competition was unfair, while supporters defended Hernandez, saying she followed the rules and deserved her victory. Hernandez also responded to the backlash, calling much of the criticism unfair and pointing out that she has not always dominated competitions.
