Life can change in an instant, and few people know that better than Jared and Misty Blackwelder, farmers from Springfield, Missouri. In 2017, after leaving their 32 dairy cows to graze during stormy weather, they returned hours later to a heartbreaking scene — every cow had been killed by a lightning strike.
Veterinarians confirmed the rare tragedy, saying they had never seen so many cows killed at once. Experts believe the animals may have huddled together during the storm, making the strike even more deadly.
Beyond the emotional pain, the couple suffered a financial loss of over $60,000, with each cow valued between $2,000 and $2,500. Jared said the loss hit especially hard because he had raised and cared for every one of them himself.
