Expert tells parents to ask baby’s consent when changing diapers!

Posted on June 6, 2026 By admin

An Australian sexuality educator has sparked controversy after suggesting parents should ask a baby for “consent” before changing their diaper, arguing that a culture of consent should begin at birth.

Deanne Carson says it’s not about expecting a verbal “yes” from infants, but about building respect, awareness, and communication early. She encourages parents to talk through actions like, “I’m going to change your diaper now,” and pause to observe the child’s reactions, helping them develop a sense that their body matters.

However, critics say the idea is unrealistic and overcomplicates basic parenting, arguing babies can’t understand consent. Some commentators called it “nonsense,” while others mocked the concept online with comparisons to pets and routine care.

Others defended Carson’s intent, saying her message was about encouraging respectful communication with children, even if the diaper example went too far.

Despite the backlash, the debate highlights a broader discussion about how parents teach boundaries and respect from the earliest stages of childhood.
