Found this smooth wooden object in an old sewing tin.!

Posted on June 6, 2026 By admin

A darning mushroom is a small wooden sewing tool often found in old sewing kits, shaped like a rounded mushroom.

It was used to repair socks and knitted clothing by stretching fabric over its smooth top, making it easier to stitch up holes and worn areas.

Once common in households before mass-produced clothing, it helped people extend the life of their garments. The sock was placed over the rounded head, and thread was woven across the damaged area to create a strong patch.

Usually made from hardwood like beech or maple, darning mushrooms were sometimes plain or decorated. Similar tools, like darning eggs, were also used.

Today, they are seen as vintage collectibles and symbols of a time when repairing clothes was a normal, sustainable part of everyday life.
