Why Ryan O’Neal’s son wasn’t invited to the star’s funeral

Ryan O’Neal battled leukemia and prostate cancer before passing away from heart failure on December 8, 2023, at age 82. Once a Hollywood heartthrob known for Love Story and Barry Lyndon, his final days showed a frail man far from his charismatic prime.

Despite his fame, O’Neal’s funeral was small—just 25 attendees. Most of his children, including Redmond, Tatum, and Griffin, were absent. Redmond, his son with Farrah Fawcett, was in a state hospital, struggling with addiction and mental illness. Griffin claimed he wasn’t invited, and Tatum, despite reconciling with her father after years of estrangement, also didn’t attend.

The actor was laid to rest beside Fawcett, who died in 2009. Their relationship was filled with love, regret, and controversy—some claim Ryan ignored Farrah’s wish not to be buried. Others, like close friend Alana Stewart, defended their bond as a deep, if complicated, love story.

O’Neal’s son Patrick has since taken up defending his father’s legacy, especially after the Emmys initially excluded Ryan from their “In Memoriam” segment. The Television Academy later corrected the omission, bringing some peace to a son who felt his father deserved more recognition.
