Many people face pressure from society to follow a traditional life path: career, marriage, and children. Couples who choose not to have kids often face intrusive questions, while those who do—especially those considered “different”—can be judged harshly.
Over 20 years ago, Patti White’s daughter Lisa, who has Down syndrome, announced she was pregnant. This was a shock, as men with Down syndrome are often thought to be infertile. Despite criticism and concern, Patti supported Lisa’s decision to keep the baby.
At 29, Lisa was living independently and working full-time. She had a relationship with another person with Down syndrome, and while many doubted her ability to parent, Lisa proved them wrong.
Her son, Nic, was born four weeks early and also has Down syndrome. Though his father passed away when Nic was five, he was raised by Lisa and Patti, who were both deeply devoted to him. Despite social stigma and lost friendships, Nic thrived—graduating college and growing into a kind, respectful young man.
In 2016, Patti shared a proud update: Lisa and Nic had defied the odds with love and resilience. Their story challenges perceptions about parenting, disability, and what makes a family.
