A tragic accident in Brazil has claimed the life of 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas during a bungee jumping event in Limeira, São Paulo.
According to reports, Maria Eduarda fell approximately 130 feet (40 meters) from the “Skeleton Bridge” after she was allegedly pushed from the platform without being properly attached to a safety rope. Emergency responders were called to the scene, but she was pronounced dead.
Videos circulating online reportedly captured the horrifying moments after the jump, with bystanders realizing something had gone terribly wrong. Witnesses could be heard shouting, “The rope, people, the rope,” as panic spread among those present.
Authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the incident. Local reports indicate that six people connected to the event—five men and one woman—were taken into custody as investigators examine whether critical safety procedures were ignored. Witnesses told police that Maria Eduarda’s safety cord had not been secured before the jump.
Her fiancé, who was present during the incident, reportedly required medical attention after learning of her death.
One event organizer allegedly told investigators that staff members did not have clearly defined responsibilities and that safety checks were performed collectively. Another suspect reportedly provided a similar account. Their attorney stated that those involved are “in a state of shock.”
The devastating incident has raised serious concerns about safety standards and oversight at adventure tourism events.
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas was just 21 years old. Her death has left family, friends, and many others mourning a young life lost in circumstances that investigators are still working to fully understand.
Rest in peace, Maria Eduarda. 💔
