Alex Ligertwood, longtime lead singer of Santana, has died in Los Angeles at 79, Fox News Digital confirmed. Details of his death were not released.
Ligertwood fronted Santana across multiple eras from 1979 to 1994, serving as lead vocalist in several lineups during the band’s major commercial success. He is best known for songs like “Winning,” “Hold On,” and “All I Ever Wanted,” which helped shape Santana’s rock, pop, and Latin sound.
His wife, Shawn Brogan, said they had been together for 36 years and married for 25, adding that he passed peacefully in his sleep after performing his final show just two weeks earlier. She described him as deeply loved and devoted to music.
Born in December 1946 in Scotland, Ligertwood also worked with artists such as Jeff Beck, Brian Auger, Average White Band, and David Sancious before and alongside his Santana career.
