Thirty years later, we sat across from each other and talked for hours.
Life hadn’t been easy for Marcus. A football injury ended his scholarship, family responsibilities forced him to leave college, and years of setbacks left him working at a small café just to get by.
Yet he never complained.
Finally, I asked the question I’d carried for three decades:
“Why did you ask me to dance that night?”
Marcus smiled sadly.
“Because I knew what it felt like to be invisible. My brother had cerebral palsy, and people looked right past him. At prom, they were doing the same thing to you.”
Tears filled my eyes.
One simple act of kindness had changed my life.
Then I asked if I could return the favor.
A few days later, Marcus accepted a position with my company, helping people with disabilities access housing and public spaces.
Today, he helps thousands of families every year.
All because one boy crossed a room and asked a girl in a wheelchair:
“Would you like to dance?” ❤️
