Rain slicked the steps of the Mason County courthouse as Sarah Collins arrived with her six-year-old daughter, Emma. The gray Texas sky hung low over the building, while trucks and sheriff cars lined the street outside.
Sarah hadn’t slept. At her kitchen table the night before, she had spread out her father’s will, property records, and an Army letter about her husband Daniel—listed as “presumed deceased,” never confirmed. Those words had haunted her for years.
Now she stood in court trying to defend the small house she believed was rightfully hers. She dressed carefully in a navy dress and gray cardigan, trying to look composed rather than defeated.
Emma held her hand tightly, wearing a yellow sweater and pink raincoat, clutching a tiny beaded purse. At the courthouse door, she quietly asked, “Mommy, are they going to be mean again?”
Sarah paused, unable to answer right away, knowing this day would decide far more than just a piece of property.
