Many parents fear their child going missing, which is why they set strict rules about staying close and checking in. But children can sometimes wander off, distracted and unaware of how quickly they can get lost in crowded or unfamiliar places.
That’s exactly what happened when a 2-year-old girl disappeared from her home in New York State, triggering a frantic search by her family and local authorities.
State Trooper Brian Hotchkiss joined the search immediately. Officers first checked nearby homes, hoping she had simply wandered to a neighbor, but there were no leads. As time passed and darkness approached, concern grew that she might be outside in the nearby woods and mountains.
Realizing the urgency, Hotchkiss climbed to a higher vantage point to scan the area. At first, he saw nothing but trees—until he noticed a small pink dot in the distance matching the child’s clothing. Following it, he discovered the missing girl and reached her safely.
The quick thinking and persistence turned a frightening situation into a successful rescue, bringing relief to her family.
