Venezuela’s northern coast has been struck by two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude just one minute apart, in what is being called the strongest seismic activity in over a century.
The epicenter was near Morón, about 104 miles from Caracas, according to the US Geological Survey. Severe destruction has been reported, including collapsed buildings and major damage at Simón Bolívar International Airport, which has been shut down.
Officials report rising casualties, with numbers increasing from dozens to over 160 confirmed dead and nearly 1,000 injured, though fears remain that the death toll could rise significantly.
Authorities warn the situation is still developing, with many people potentially trapped under rubble. Rescue teams from several countries, including the United States, Mexico, and others, are being deployed to assist in search and relief efforts.
Emergency shelters have been opened, and public activities have been suspended as the country responds to the disaster.
