The Bathroom Sign Nearly Everyone Misunderstands

Have you ever seen “WC” on a door and wondered what it means? Millions see it every day in airports, hotels, and malls—but few know its origin.

“WC” stands for Water Closet, a term from the 1800s when indoor plumbing first appeared. Back then, these small rooms were designed just for flushing toilets, while most homes still had separate bathrooms and outdoor toilets.

The name stuck, even as bathrooms evolved into the modern spaces we use today.
