Gidget’ Star Dies at 92

Veteran actor Joby Baker, best known for his roles in the classic films Gidget and Girl Happy, has died at the age of 92.

According to his family, Baker passed away from natural causes on June 22 at a hospital in Yonkers. His death was announced publicly on July 4.

Born on March 26, 1934, in Montreal, Canada, Baker built a successful career in Hollywood during the 1950s and 1960s, becoming known for his warm personality and comedic performances.

He gained recognition as Stinky in the 1959 surfing classic Gidget, starring Sandra Dee, a film that helped introduce surf culture to mainstream audiences and inspired several sequels and television adaptations.

In 1965, Baker appeared alongside Elvis Presley in the musical comedy Girl Happy, portraying Wilbur. The film became one of Presley’s most memorable musical comedies of the decade.

Throughout his career, Baker also made numerous television appearances, including roles in The Donna Reed Show, The Twilight Zone, Good Morning, World, and the sitcom The Good Guys alongside Bob Denver.

After leaving acting, Baker devoted himself to painting, creating colorful works that were exhibited in galleries and admired by collectors.

He is survived by his daughters Fredricka Baker and Michelle Wayland, his son Scott Zimmerman, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
