I bought an old camera at a flea market just to cheer myself up. I thought it was nothing more than a forgotten antique… until I found a roll of film hidden inside.
My name is Amber. I lived with my mom and my cat, Waffle. It had always been just the two of us.
I became a lawyer because it was the life my mom wanted for me. But my real passion was photography.
Every time I talked about making photography my career, she got angry.
“Amber, photography is not a real future. You already have a career.”
After another argument, I ended up walking through a flea market. Among old books and dusty decorations, I found a vintage camera with a cracked leather strap.
I bought it for $15.
When I got home and opened it, I discovered something inside.
A forgotten roll of film.
The next day, I developed the photos.
The first pictures were normal.
Then I saw one that made my hands shake.
A little girl at an amusement park.
Me.
The same dress. The same haircut. The same birthmark on my knee.
But I wasn’t standing next to my mother.
I was holding hands with a man.
A man I had never seen before.
My whole life, my mom told me my father died before I was born.
But this picture proved there was a story she never told me.
I rushed home and placed the photo in front of her.
“Mom… who is he?”
Her face changed.
She tried to say it was a coincidence.
But I knew.
That was me.
And that was my father.
For the first time, I realized the person I trusted most might have been hiding the biggest truth of my life.
