Fire Captain, Wife & Two Sons Killed in Utah Canyon Crash — Young Daughter Survives Alone

Posted on July 21, 2026 By admin

A Utah family of five was killed after a sudden flash flood swept through a canyon during a hiking trip. The victims were identified as Provo Fire Captain Spencer Long, his wife Katrina, and their three sons. Their daughter, Lydia, who was not on the trip, is the family’s only surviving child.

Authorities believe the family was caught in a flash flood triggered by heavy rain near Sunglow Campground. Search and rescue teams recovered all five victims over two days.

The Provo Fire Department and Summit Medical Spa paid heartfelt tributes to Spencer and Katrina, remembering their kindness, leadership, and dedication. A GoFundMe has raised nearly $238,000 to help Lydia with funeral costs, counseling, education, and rebuilding her life after the devastating loss.
