For twelve years, I thought I knew everything about my mother.
She had been bedridden, and Brenda, her longtime caregiver, had been by her side every day.
Then one morning, Brenda called me crying.
“Your mother fired me. She replaced me with someone else.”
I rushed home, expecting the worst.
But when I opened my mother’s bedroom door, I froze.
A huge man with a beard, tattoos, and a leather vest was sitting beside her bed, feeding her soup.
And my mother was smiling.
“His name is Louis,” she said. “He’s staying.”
I couldn’t understand it.
Brenda had cared for her for twelve years. Why would Mom choose a stranger?
But then I watched Louis.
He treated my mother with kindness. He cooked for her, helped her outside, read to her, and brought life back into her eyes.
Still, something felt strange.
Every time I entered the room, their conversations stopped.
Then Mom became seriously ill and ended up in the hospital.
Louis stayed beside her all night, holding her hand.
I confronted him.
“I want you gone. I’ll pay you whatever it takes.”
He looked at me sadly.
“Your mother made me promise never to tell you…”
My heart stopped.
“What secret?”
