Version 1
I can’t have children. At a family dinner, my brother proudly declared that he and his wife would inherit everything from our parents because they have kids.
I asked my mother if that was true.
She replied, “Why would we leave anything to you? You’re a dead end.”
Heartbroken, I handed her a box filled with letters from the children I mentor.
“You make me feel like I matter.”
“Because of you, I believe in myself.”
As she read, the room went silent. Tears filled her eyes.
“They’re not my children by blood,” I said, “but they’re my legacy.”
My mother looked at me differently and whispered, “You’ve created a legacy far greater than any inheritance.”
