My mother has Alzheimer’s and no longer recognizes me as her daughter. One day, while I was braiding her hair, just like she used to do for me as a child, she took my hand and whispered that she had a secret.
She told me she believed my father had been having an affair with her nurse, Linda. My heart sank because I’d seen them kissing when I was just 14. My father convinced me I’d misunderstood and slowly made me believe my mother didn’t want me visiting her.
But my mother remembered something different. She said she’d written me letters for years, asking me to come home, but my father never delivered them.
When I confronted him, he finally admitted he’d hidden the letters and kept us apart because he was ashamed of the affair.
The next morning, I read one of those letters to my mother while braiding her hair. She didn’t recognize me, but she held my hand. And for that moment, we were together again.
