What was meant to be a short trip to the Dominican Republic ended in heartbreak for NYPD Officer Rebecca DePaula.
The 31-year-old traveled to Santo Domingo for breast implant removal surgery, a decision her family said was rooted in her Christian faith. After the procedure, she reportedly developed a severe bacterial infection and died on August 2, 2026.
DePaula had joined the NYPD in 2025 and was recently honored as Officer of the Month for her dedication to the community. She also served as a Christian pastor alongside her husband.
Her family says they are devastated and are asking Dominican authorities to investigate whether medical negligence played a role in her death.
As they await answers, loved ones are preparing to bring Rebecca home, remembering her for her faith, compassion, and commitment to serving others.
