Christmas Eve was supposed to be perfect for my sons, Ryan and Liam.
But my husband James was acting strangely. He kept checking his phone and pacing around the house. Around seven that evening, he suddenly grabbed his coat.
“I forgot something. I’ll be back soon.”
He never came back.
Midnight passed. I called and texted him repeatedly, but there was no answer.
At six the next morning, I heard the front door open.
James walked in looking exhausted.
And he was carrying a little girl who looked about three.
She was clutching a doll and had dried tears on her cheeks.
“James… who is she?”
He placed her on the couch.
“Her name is Ellie.”
Then he said the words that shattered everything.
“She’s my daughter.”
Her mother, Clara, had died two days earlier. James claimed he had no choice but to take Ellie in.
But I knew immediately what that meant.
Clara had been his ex.
And our marriage had been built on a lie.
I kept my composure for the sake of my sons, but that night I cried behind a locked bathroom door.
I could accept that Ellie needed a home.
What I couldn’t accept was James expecting me to raise the child born from his betrayal.
Over the next few days, I quietly prepared to leave.
I found proof of the affair on his phone. I contacted Clara’s sister and discovered James had lied to her too.
By New Year’s Day, I had a plan.
I took my sons, packed our belongings, and left James a letter.
When he returned, the house was empty.
