83-Year-Old Woman Dies After Tragic Heat Accident
Martha Irene Van Egmond, 83, of Mississippi, died after a heartbreaking accident left her and her husband trapped outside in extreme heat for more than three hours.
Martha fell while working in a flowerbed. When her husband, Rick, tried to help her, he also fell and could not get back up. The couple remained under the hot sun until two men from a nearby apartment complex finally came to their aid.
Sadly, it was too late for Martha.
A devoted Christian, mother of seven, and passionate gardener, Martha was remembered by her husband as a loving and caring woman.
“She died in one of her happy places, a flowerbed,” Rick wrote. “She’s celebrating with Jesus now.”
Rick is now warning others not to underestimate extreme heat.
“The heat will kill you. The sun is hot. It’s hotter than you think it is.”
Her story is a heartbreaking reminder to take extreme heat seriously, especially for older adults.
