Cheryl Hall, the beloved British actress known for Citizen Smith and Doctor Who, has died at 76.

Hall’s death was announced by actor Robin Askwith, who dated her in the 1970s. In a heartfelt tribute, he described her as a courageous, charismatic and groundbreaking working-class actress.

Hall began her career in the late 1960s and became widely known for playing Shirley Johnson in Citizen Smith, alongside Robert Lindsay. She also appeared in the Doctor Who story Carnival of Monsters as Shirna.

Her career spanned decades, with appearances in The Bill, Poirot, Inspector Morse, Casualty, Silent Witness and EastEnders.

She was also once considered for the iconic role of Jo Grant in Doctor Who before Katy Manning was cast.

Outside acting, Hall entered politics, becoming a Labour candidate and later serving on Kent County Council.

Remembering her, Askwith wrote:

“She was my beginning. RIP Cheryl Hall.”

Her passing marks the loss of a familiar face whose work entertained generations of British television viewers.
