Australian athletics is mourning the sudden death of Natasha Ward, a promising middle-distance runner who died at just 21.
Her death was announced on July 30 by NSW Athletics and Sutherland District Athletics Club. Her cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
Ward was remembered not only for her talent but also for her kindness, determination and infectious smile.
She competed in the 400m, 800m and 1,500m events and represented Macquarie University at the UniSport Nationals. In April, she won bronze in the 800m.
She also competed at the 2024 Australian Championships alongside some of the country’s top athletes.
Her club said her warmth and enthusiasm left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.
Tributes quickly poured in from teammates, athletes and fans, all remembering Ward as a talented runner and genuinely kind person.
She was only 21, but her smile and spirit left a lasting mark far beyond the finish line.
