We arrived at our friends’ wedding expecting a beautiful celebration. Instead, the bride handed us a list of chores.
Sarah and Tom had no wedding staff.
No caterers. No bartenders. No cleaners.
So they decided their guests would do the work.
We were handed printed task lists:
- Set up chairs
- Serve appetizers
- Fold napkins
- Clean bathrooms
- Serve drinks
At first, we thought it was a joke.
It wasn’t.
While Sarah and Tom enjoyed their wedding, we were running around in expensive clothes, carrying tables and serving food.
Meanwhile, their family sat comfortably drinking champagne.
That was when we realized something:
There was never going to be replacement staff. We were the staff.
So during a quick break, the guests came up with a plan.
We would still help—but we wouldn’t give them the expensive wedding gifts we’d planned.
Our work would be the gift.
Later, when Sarah and Tom opened their presents, I stood up.
“Sarah, Tom, we had planned to give you about $1,000 each.”
Sarah smiled.
“But after working your wedding all night, we’ve decided to keep that money as payment for our services.”
Her smile disappeared.
“Payment? But you’re our friends!”
Before she could say more, she stepped backward.
Unfortunately, the wedding cake was directly behind her.
Her heel caught in her dress.
She fell straight into the enormous cake.
Splat.
For a moment, everyone was silent.
Then we started laughing.
Twenty-five guests-turned-workers walked out together—with our dignity, our money, and our sense of humor intact.
We never got invited back.
Honestly?
That was the best wedding gift they could have given us.
