When 13-year-old Aaron told his single mother he was “a free person” because he was making money from YouTube, she decided it was time for a lesson about the real world.
His mother, Heidi Johnson, was tired of her son wanting the privileges of adulthood without the responsibilities.
So she wrote him a “roommate contract.”
The note explained that if Aaron wanted to live like an independent adult, he would have to pay for his share of rent, utilities, internet, food, and other household expenses. He would also have to cook his own meals and help clean the house.
She ended the letter simply:
“Love, Mom.”
Aaron was furious. He crumpled up the note, threw it on the floor, and stormed out.
But after having time to think, something changed.
He returned and asked what he could do to earn his privileges back.
His mother explained that the lesson was never really about making a 13-year-old pay rent.
It was about teaching him that everything he enjoyed had a cost—and someone was making sacrifices to provide it.
She later explained:
“Nothing comes free. Someone is making a sacrifice somewhere down the line.”
Her message was simple: growing up isn’t just about having freedom.
It’s about accepting responsibility for it.
