At 35, I was a tired single mother rushing home from work when I stopped to help a starving pregnant girl outside a grocery store.
She looked barely 20 and told me she hadn’t eaten properly in days. I bought her a hot meal, offered more help and gave her my work business card.
When I came back outside, she was gone.
A month later, my boss called me into his office.
“What did you do with that pregnant girl?” he demanded.
I soon discovered she was pregnant with his son’s child. She had tried to get help from him, but he rejected her. When she mentioned that a stranger had treated her with kindness, she gave them my business card.
My boss blamed me for getting involved and fired me.
I fought back legally, but after years of hearings, I received only a small settlement. I found another job and eventually tried to move on.
I never forgot the girl, though. I always wondered what happened to her and her baby.
Then, years later, my phone rang.
“Is this the woman who helped me outside the grocery store?”
It was her.
She told me she had given birth to a baby girl named Hope. She had survived homelessness, found support, and eventually met a kind man named Marco who loved both her and her daughter.
“I’ve been looking for you for years,” she said through tears. “You saved me once. Please let me return that kindness now.”
I had helped her expecting nothing in return.
I never imagined that one hot meal would eventually come full circle.
