Shelley Fabares, Beloved Star of The Donna Reed Show and Coach, Dies at 82 🕊️

Shelley Fabares, the actress and singer who became a television favorite on The Donna Reed Show and later won a new generation of fans on Coach, has died at 82.

Fabares died Saturday, August 22, in Los Angeles following a brief illness. Her family confirmed that she was surrounded by loved ones.

Her family remembered her as a devoted wife, cherished stepmother, loyal friend, and a woman whose warmth, humor, and generosity touched countless lives.

Born January 19, 1944, in Santa Monica, California, Fabares began acting as a child. Her breakthrough came in 1958 when she was cast as Mary Stone on The Donna Reed Show, where she quickly became a household name.

She also launched a successful singing career during the show’s run. Her 1962 hit “Johnny Angel” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Fabares later appeared alongside Elvis Presley in three films—Girl Happy, Spinout, and Clambake—before returning to television for another major success.

In 1989, she joined Coach as Christine Armstrong opposite Craig T. Nelson. The role earned her two Primetime Emmy nominations and introduced her to a whole new generation of viewers.

Off-screen, Fabares faced significant health challenges. She underwent a liver transplant in 2000 after being diagnosed with autoimmune hepatitis and later advocated for organ donation.

She was married to actor Mike Farrell, best known for MASH*, from 1984 until her death. She was also a stepmother to his children.
