8-Year-Old Louisiana Girl Dies After Rare “Brain-Eating Amoeba” Infection

Lillian Smart, an 8-year-old Louisiana girl known for her bright smile, has died after developing an extremely rare infection caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly called the “brain-eating amoeba.”

Health officials believe Lillian was exposed while swimming in Lake Claiborne. She had been hospitalized since August 15, but the infection caused severe brain damage, and doctors were unable to save her.

Her parents, Daniel and Rebecca Smart, shared the heartbreaking news, saying their daughter’s injuries were too severe for her little body to recover.

Lillian was remembered by her community as a happy, loving child who always seemed to bring joy wherever she went. Even during her hospitalization, friends and neighbors gathered to celebrate her birthday and support her family.

Her loved ones now hope she will be remembered not for the rare illness that took her life, but for the happiness she brought to everyone around her.
