Single Mom of 5 Faces Prison After Leaving Teen Daughter to Babysit

Mom Arrested After Leaving Her 14-Year-Old Daughter Home With Four Younger Siblings

During the pandemic, single mom Melissa Shields Henderson had to make a difficult choice. Her children’s school and daycare were closed, but she still needed to work to support her five kids.

She left her 14-year-old daughter, Linley, in charge of her four younger siblings while she went to work.

Henderson believed it was legal because Georgia law allows children 13 and older to babysit younger siblings for limited periods.

One day, her 4-year-old son, Thaddeus, saw a friend outside and quietly left the house to play. His sister noticed he was missing about 10–15 minutes later, found him, and brought him home safely.

But during those few minutes, another parent called the police.

When Henderson returned from work, officers told her what happened. Two weeks later, police returned and arrested her.

She was handcuffed, taken to jail, and charged with reckless conduct. She faced up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine.

The case sparked debate over parenting, responsibility, and whether a mother trying to provide for her children should face criminal charges after a child briefly wandered outside.

Would you have made the same decision in her situation?
