Marianne Faithfull, Iconic Singer and Actress, Dies at 78

Marianne Faithfull, the celebrated British singer and actress, has died at the age of 78, her spokesperson confirmed.

“Marianne passed away peacefully in London today, in the company of her loving family,” her representative said. “She will be dearly missed.”

Faithfull rose to fame in the 1960s with her haunting voice and unforgettable presence. Her breakthrough came in 1964 with As Tears Go By, written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones.

She soon became one of the defining figures of the era, both through her music and her highly publicized relationship with Jagger.

Her life was marked by extraordinary highs and painful struggles, including addiction and years away from the spotlight. But Faithfull made a powerful comeback in 1979 with Broken English, an album that transformed her career and showcased the deep, distinctive voice shaped by her experiences.

She also enjoyed a successful acting career, appearing in films including The Girl on a Motorcycle and Marie Antoinette, as well as numerous theatre productions.

Her career spanned more than six decades, and she continued creating music despite serious health challenges, including a severe case of COVID-19 in 2020.
