For months, the same strange dog waited beside my son Caleb’s grave every Sunday.
Caleb had died three years earlier at just 19, and visiting his grave was the only thing that made the grief bearable.
The dog had no collar and never begged for food. He simply stayed beside Caleb’s headstone, then disappeared before I left.
One Sunday, I decided to follow him.
He led me through unfamiliar streets and stopped at a small, weathered house. He scratched twice on the door.
When it opened, I froze.
“Sadie?”
She was Caleb’s old girlfriend.
Then I heard a child’s voice from inside.
“Mommy?”
A little boy, about three years old, appeared.
The moment I saw his face, my heart stopped. His eyes, his smile, even the way he raised one eyebrow—it was Caleb.
Sadie finally told me the truth.
The boy was Caleb’s son.
She had discovered she was pregnant after Caleb died. She was young, terrified, and never found the courage to tell me.
Then I learned the dog had belonged to Caleb too.
That explained everything.
Jasper hadn’t been visiting a random grave.
He had been visiting his best friend.
I crouched beside the little boy.
“Did you know my daddy?” he asked.
I looked at him through tears.
“I knew him very well.”
“Because he was my little boy.”
The boy looked at me.
“So you’re my grandma?”
I could only nod.
Then he hugged me.
Three years after losing my son, I thought I had nothing left of him.
I was wrong.
I still had a piece of Caleb—and he was holding my hand. ❤️
